Update on the impact of ‘Molly’s Project’

The Middleton Foundation is proud to announce the successful growth and ongoing impact that Molly’s Project is having on those with learning disabilities and/or autism in the North-East of England. The project was established to tackle the severe lack of appropriate accommodation for these individuals, by offering them secure, long-term housing options that are fully equipped for each individual’s needs.

With the alarming amount of people with severe social, mental, or physical challenges in the North-East, currently either homeless or living in unsuitable accommodation, the Middleton Foundation has dedicated £2.5m to address this issue. To date, Molly’s Project has successfully purchased three houses, providing stable, permanent homes for eight residents.

“Our goal is to ensure as many people as possible with learning disabilities and/or autism have not just a safe place to live, but somewhere properly managed for their specific needs” said Lucy Middleton, Trustee of the Middleton Foundation. “Our aim is to acquire an additional 10-20 homes over the next few years, enabling us to support as many people as possible, for as long as they need”.

Impact on Residents and their Families

Molly’s Project has already made a hugely significant difference in the lives of its residents, specifically at one property, which is managed and supported in partnership with housing association YMCA North Tyneside.

A family member of one resident said, “I’m extremely grateful to YMCA North Tyneside and The Middleton Foundation for their financial support, which has provided my brother with a secure place to live, hopefully into his old age. This has given me confidence that he is well cared for and happy. I’ve noticed how relaxed and content he is when I visit, and what a difference this new home has made to his life”.

A care worker at the same residence said, “The people we support sleep a lot better at their new home, are more relaxed, with less risk of tripping on the stairs. One resident is really enjoying her room, which is decorated to her taste, and she loves using her ensuite shower. She is enjoying using the kitchen where she is supported to bake and has much more room to store her large collection of handbags”.

A spokesperson for YMCA North Tyneside said, “We are excited to be working with the Middleton Foundation on Molly’s Project. Our first house has already had a massive impact on the lives of the three residents, who have settled in so well. Not only has their new home had a positive effect on them, but also the staff team who support them, and their families, who now have peace of mind that they are being well looked after in a safe environment”.

Looking Ahead

The Middleton Foundation are committed to continuing this vital work and creating more Molly homes. Together with housing associations they are looking to expand their reach and support even more individuals in need.
